The outcome of a wild bee fauna survey in a secondary forest is reported. Sampling was carried out mainly on herbaceous and shrubby vegetation under and at the border of the forest. Results are compared with data collected with the same methodology from a previously surveyed grassland nearby. The secondary forest was richer in Anthophoridae and Apidae species, and less diverse in Megachilidae. Similarity between the two habitats was low. Several unidentified species of Ceratinula, Trichocerapis mirabilis and the stingless bees Melipona bicolor, M. quadrifasciata, M. marginata, Paratrigona subnuda, Scaptotrigona tubiba and S. xanthotricha, are among the species dependent on the forest environment to survive. Bee population densities in the forest understory... |

Stingless bees were collected between 1984 and 1990 in continuous forest, forest fragments and cleared areas 90 Km north of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Several methods were employed. a total of 54 species of 21 genera were collected including two undescribed species of Plebeia Schwarz, 1938. The most abundant genera were Trigona Jurine, 1807; Melipona Illiger, 1806; Partamona Schwarz, 1939 and Tetragona Lepeletier, 1825. The most abundant species were Trigona crassipes (Fabricius, 1793) and T. fulviventris Guérin, 1835. Fruit fly traps baited with fragrances for euglossine bees showed to be an useful method for stingless bee collection too. The study area showed a great richness in relation to other regions of the world. However the density of nests found... |

In addition to the Survey of the Entomological Fauna in Paraná State, the Ctenuchidae were studied in its ecological and faunistic aspects. The material was collected using one light trap installed in eight different sites of the State: Antonina, São José dos Pinhais, Colombo, Ponta Grossa, Telêmaco Borba, Jundiaí do Sul, Guarapuava and Fênix, from October 1986 to September 1987. The total number of specimens and means values of capture were analyzed. Indices of diversity and evenness were used to discuss richness and dominance of species in each locality. Besides using ecological indices, the data were also compared by Clustering Analysis, Principal Coordinate Analysis and Linear Correlation Coefficient. The results were compared with meteorological and... |

Because of strong tidal currents, the bottom of the Dover Strait consists of coarse sediment which is colonized by a pebble community. A quantitative study, based on 0.1 m(2) quadrat samples taken by divers, was conducted on this community to establish the richness of benthic macrofauna (in terms of biomass and diversity) and to provide conclusive data on global community structure (spatial and temporal heterogeneity, trophic structure). Eight samples were taken between June 1992 and June 1993, eight replicates being taken on each sampling visit. One hundred and one species were identified, in 10 zoological groups, and a mean biomass of 281 g.m(-2) (ash free dry weight) was calculated. The Shannon diversity index was low (H' = 1.24) because of the strong... |

Annually exploited communities from the Nile delta and two nearby lagoons (Manzalah and Edkou) were monitored from 1962 to 1989. The changes in community structure were analysed as a function of two events: fishing pressure growth (motorized fishing vessels) which increased by a factor of 19 between 1952 and 1962; and the construction of the Aswan Dam, which was built between 1965 and 1969, reducing the flow of the Nile by 90 %. Before the construction of the dam, increased sea fishing pressure led to a decline in landings from 33,832 tons in 1962 to 8,522 tons in 1969, but with no structural change in the exploited community. However, following completion of the dam in 1969, the community structure changed and a significant correlation was detected... |

It was sampled the litter frogs at altitudinal sites of a semideciduous mesophytic forest located at Sena do Japi (Jundiaí, São Paulo, 23º17'S, 47º00'W, 800-1300m altitude, 1500mm rain/year). Forty two plots of 8x8m were sampled in the dry/cold season of 1995: 21 at a Higher Site (HS) (1000m) and 21 at a Lower Site (LS) (850m). The plots were evenly located near, mid-distance, and far from the stream-bed. It was found a total of five species, three at each site. Eleutherodactylus guentheri comprised 83% of the individuals at HS and E. juipoca 67% at LS. The density of individuals was higher at HS and near the stream. The greater density at HS may be due to greater humidity there, provided by mist. The frogs may aggregate in wetter places (stream edges) in... |

A survey of the tidal pool fish community was carried out between february/1987 and january/1988, at Cabo Branco Beach, João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. Specimens were collected monthly at low tide, using rotenone. A total of 3143 specimens was obtained. The most speciose families were Ophichthidae (14% of the total number of species), Mugilidae (11%) and Muraenidae (9%), and the most representative ones in number of individuais were Gobiidae (48%), Pomacentridae (13%) and Labrisomidae (10%). The main resident species were Bathygobius soporator (Valenciennes, 1837) and Abudefduf saxalilis (Linnaeus, 1758). The presence of a large number of juveniles in the pools indicated the importance of the studied sites as nursery áreas for several fish species. |

This study assesses how differences in nutrient flux and bottom currents affect the diversity and trophic structure of deep-sea polychaete communities from the tropical northeast Atlantic at 20 degrees to 21 degrees N latitude. Faunal assemblages were studied from 3 sets of USNEL box cores (0.25 m(2)) taken at depths of 1700, 3100 and 4600 m. In terms of primary productivity, the cores were taken beneath water which is eutrophic, mesotrophic and oligotrophic, respectively. Total polychaete abundance, abundance of dominant species, and faunal similarity and diversity were compared among the 3 sites. Polychaete abundance decreased with increasing depth. Community structure reflected environmental characteristics as well as the influence of coastal upwelling.... |

The lack of bioecological studies on aphids in regions with complex floristic and faunistic structure, such as the Atlantic Tropical Rain Forest, lead to the initiation of this research. The objectives were to determine species richness and diversity of aphids and to investigate the influence of altitude and environmental perturbations on aphid populations. The collections were made with yellow pan traps at 11 sites with altitudes from -10 m to 1000 m above sea level (a.s.l.), in the Serra do Mar, Paraná, Brazil, from December 1993 to December 1994. Richness and diversity of aphids were greatest at 85 m a.s.l. This site was characterized by three distinct floral communities: primary vegetation, secondaiy vegetation in successional stages, and secondary... |
